Earliest family members departed from the Hesse region of Germany at the invitation of Catherine the Great to colonize Russia along the Volga River. Colonists were offered free land, and could maintain their German citizenship and language, their German school system, and their religion, and were not required to serve in the Russian military. These German colonies in Russia were typically settled by groups of families from the same region in Germany who were of the same religious faith.
